“The notary’s copies of the three documents about the founding of the Monte dei Paschi which are printed in Mengozzi’s volume III are in MS. Protocolli [of the Notaries] 1251, on the spine of which is the old number ‘Stanza Prima. Scaffale N.^o XII Lettera F N.^o 4’ (Canto XLIII: 216: [XLIII: ll.46-7] ‘1251 of the Protocols marked also/ X, I, I, F, and four arabic’). As stated near the top of page 219, [XLIII: l.139], this volume does have ten and a half blank leaves between the documents and the index. The documents are on folios 165v through 180r, but are not in order; the second document and then the first document are inserted into the third document (fols. 171r-75r and 175v-79r), and there is a little additional material linking the documents” (K&E 3: 513).
